How we handle our Bulls We need to give you the background on how our cattle are raised. Since we run mostly commercial cows we wanted bulls that could stay in condition using our modest methods of feeding. We try to utilize dead pasture grass or stalks for fall and winter and only feed hay during calving. Even then, they are not ‘free choice’ fed but expected to go out and graze to finish filling up. We do not feed grain to any cows. The registered cattle are run with the commercial cows and treated exactly the same way. We have identified hard doing cows and they have gone to the sale barn, not sold as breeding females. In addition, the cattle kept for bulls or replacements are only the top 2/3 of the calf crop of the registered cattle and only the top 1/3 of the commercial heifer calves.. The rest go to our feedlot to provide carcass data. You can be assured that you are not being offered ‘culls.’ The bulls are developed on large tracts to encourage activity and athleticism. They are fed to gain 3.0 lbs/day with a high roughage ration. When a 90 day test is over they are kicked out onto fescue pasture with a bale of hay until they go to native grass 30 days later. They remain on native pasture until approximately 60 days before the sale when they are fed a ration while on grass and transferred to Downey Ranch on triticale 2 weeks before the sale. They do not spend their life in a lot being spoon fed! The bulls were semen evaluated in the spring and again before the sale. They are current on their vaccinations and deworming. They have also been BVD-PI tested negative and we are a Johne's test negative herd. We do use some of the bulls as yearlings, all of these will be tested for trich and are fully guaranteed. Actually, with the new Trich regulations, all the bulls will be tested whether they were used or not. Our sale is held every year on the first Friday in November. Click here for a PDF map to the sale site. Our next sale date is Friday, November 2, 2012 @ 12:30 pm CST. Our offering includes 20 month old Red Angus and Black Angus bulls (from Downey Ranch) along with home-raised, AI bred, commercial heifers. In addition, registered Red Angus females are available private treaty at the ranch. Please e-mail us for pricing and availability. Commercial Bred Heifers...30 head from the Kniebel herd and 30 head from Downeys! Remember, these heifers were from the top 1/3 of our 'born and bred cows', not purchased and bred for resale. This kind of quality and history is hard to find. We are selling some 100% 1A red angus heifers bred to red angus bulls as commercial. They were too good to cull, but not the very top end that we feel should produce seedstock. Take advantage of getting top genetics in your commercial herd!
